Who came first, Jesus or Judaism?

Restoration prinicple:  Jesus plan was in effect from the beginning.  Some churches will tell you Jesus came on the seen because things had gone arry.

Then, Why won't the Jews accept Jesus?

1.     Jesus (they say) did not fulfill the messianic requirement to restore the national sovereignty of the Jewish people in the land of Israel and to gather in all the exiles.

2.      Jesus did not fulfill the messianic criteria to bring about God's universal kingdom of Justice and peace on earth (bring the Kingdom). Daniel 7:13-14; Daniel 2:44; Daniel 7:27 (Isa 9: 6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there is no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.)

3.     Jews do not accept that God himself would or has human form.  To be created 'In his image' means in intelligence only.  The very meaning of being 'God' to them, is negated by taking on human form.  Further more, his death denies divinity--say they " doesn't his dying on the cross prove he wasn't really God at all?"

Jews also claim 'they didn't kill Jesus..'  it was the Romans.  The Romans brought the crosses, the Romans held the trial (Pilate), it was the Roman soldiers who parted his clothes and pierced his side.   But it was the Jews who planted the bug (book burning story)

Many Jews today have a hard time accepting those of any other lineage to be 'children of the covenant'

Israel was not just a nation, or a lineage, but those who enter into the covenant.

·        Matthew 3:36 And think not to say within yourselves, We are the children of Abraham, and we only have power to bring seed unto our father Abraham; for I say unto you that God is able of these stones to raise up children into Abraham.

·        Luke 3:13 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, Abraham is our father; we have kept the commandments of God, and none can inherit the promises but the children of Abraham; for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

·        John 8:39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.

·        Acts 3:25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.

·        Acts 13:26 Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent.

·        Galatians 3:7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

·        2 Nephi 12:77 For behold, I say unto you, That as many of the Gentiles as will repent, are the covenant people of the Lord; and as many of the Jews as will not repent, shall be cast off;

·        Luke 13:28 (…Christ Speaking to the Jews…)There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth among you, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you are thrust out. 29 And verily I say unto you, They shall come from the east, and the west; and from the north, and the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God;

·        Luke 19:1 And Jesus entered, and passed through Jericho. 2 And behold, there was a man named Zaccheus, who was chief among he publicans; and he was rich. ...7 And when the disciples saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner. 8 And Zaccheus stood, and said unto the Lord, Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by unjust means, I restore fourfold. 9 And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forasmuch as he also is a son of Abraham; 10 For the Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Publican

Publican, in the Gospels, is derived from the publicanus of the Vulgate, and signifies a member or employee of the Roman financial companies who farmed the taxes. From the time of the Republic the Roman State relieved itself of the trouble of collecting the taxes in the provinces by putting up the taxes of each in a lump sum to auction. The highest bidder received the authorization to extort the sum from the province in question. Such a system afforded ample opportunity for rapacious exactions on the part of the company and its officials, and the abuses were often intolerable. On account of these, and more, perhaps, because of the natural though impotent Jewish hatred of the Roman supremacy, those of the Jews who found it profitable thus to serve the foreign rulers were objects of execration to their countrymen. In the Gospel narrative we find them as a class habitually coupled with "sinners" and the "heathen". The attitude of Christ towards this, as well as other despised classes, was that of an uplifting sympathy. One great reproach cast upon Him by His enemies, the self-righteous Scribes and Pharisees, was His friendship for, and association with publicans and sinners; and consistently with this conduct it pleased Him to choose as one of the twelve Apostles Levi or Matthew the Publican (Matt., ix, 9).

What was the covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob:

Abraham:

·        Gen 12:1  'Get up out of thy land' (From Ur of Chaldea)--the original gathering

·        Gen 12:2.

·        Christ prophesied from the beginning (restoration principle) Gen 15:11-12. (xref John 8:56)

·        Bondage of Israel prophesied Gen 15:17,

·        Land promised Gen 15:21 (remember covenant with Ishmael, meaning 'God Hears'

·        Gen 16:12, Gen 17:25; Gen 22:21

Isaac:

·        Promise to Gen 16:25

·        (blessing always goes to the son of the free woman), Gen 21:10.

·        Covenant would be wrote in a type and shadow of a father sacrificing his son. (Gen 21)

·        Two sons Gen 25:25 (Esau: 6215 'felt rough'), Jacob ( 3290 'heel catcher').

·        Elder shall serve the younger. Gen 25:23.

·        Abrahams promise extended through Isaac Gen 26:3-4, 24.

·        Deception:  Gen 27:27-40

Jacob

·        Isaac transfers blessing to his son, Jacob Gen 28:3.

Christ was the promise of  'blessing'

Galatians 3:20 Now this mediator was not a mediator of the new covenant; but there is one mediator of the new covenant, who is Christ, as it is written in the law concerning the promises made to Abraham and his seed. Now Christ is the mediator of life; for this is the promise which God made unto Abraham.

God's covenant to Abraham went to the Gentiles also:

1 Nephi 7:20 And not only unto the Gentiles, but unto all the house of Israel, unto the making known of the covenants of the Father of heaven unto Abraham, saying, In thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.

2 Nephi 12:74 And I will shew unto them that fight against my word and against my people, who are of the house of Israel, that I am God, and that I covenanted with Abraham, that I would remember his seed for ever.

3 Nephi 9:63 And behold ye are the children of the prophets; and ye are of the house of Israel; and ye are of the covenant which the Father made with your fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed, shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed;

3 Nephi 9:65 And after that ye were blessed, then fulfilleth the Father the covenant which he made with Abraham, saying, In thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed, unto the pouring out of the Holy Ghost through me upon the Gentiles, which blessing upon the Gentiles, shall make them mighty above all, unto the scattering of my people, O house of Israel: and they shall be a scourge unto the people of this land.

Remember, God gives us the physical so we may understand the Spiritual.

Covenant was not just with those of the lineage:

Romans 4:13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

Romans 4:16 Therefore ye are justified of faith and works, through grace, to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to them only who are of the law, but to them also who are of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

Galatians 3:7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

Galatians 3:29 And if ye are Christ's then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Exodus:

Exodus 1:8:  Pharaoh knew not Joseph

Exodus:  1:16  Midwifes to kill sons, delivered before the midwifes arrive.  (Delivered before she travailed: "Isaiah 66:7 Before she travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a man-child."  Is a type/shadow hidden here).

Exodus 2: 11-14:  Moses slays Egyptian soldier, flees to Midian.

Exodus 2:23, 24  Bondage of people came unto God, Remembered the covenant with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob.

Note: Genesis 50:36 And it shall be done unto thee in the last days also, even as I have sworn. Therefore, Joseph said unto his brethren, God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land, unto the land which he sware unto Abraham, and unto Isaac, and to Jacob.

Christ Preached from the Beginning  (This message is also in the King James version )

John 8:52 Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.

John 8:53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead; whom makest thou thyself?

John 8:56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day; and he saw it, and was glad.

(Where is the account in the KJ bible?  Abraham knew of Christ!--Christ said it, John recorded it!  Wouldn't this undoubtedly have been passed down??!!)

Two major messages from Paul to the Jews in the New Testament:  1.  The Law of Moses was fulfilled by Christ--all pointed toward him.  2.  Those who joined the church through baptism (covenant) were also heirs to the Kingdom, not just literal descendants of Abraham

All who come into covenant are the seed, not just literal descendants

Romans 4:13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

Romans 4:16 Therefore ye are justified of faith and works, through grace, to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to them only who are of the law, but to them also who are of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

Romans 9:7 Neither, because they are all children of Abraham, are they the s

Romans 11:1 I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.  2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Know ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh complaint to God against Israel, saying,  3 Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.  4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.

Galatians 3:7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

Galatians 3:9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

Galatians 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that they might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Galatians 3:18 For if the inheritance is of the law, then it is no more of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

Galatians 3:29 And if ye are Christ's then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

God prophesied through Jeremiah (31:31-33) that He would make a new covenant (law) with them,

If you want to know more about Christ, read one of his favorite books:  The Old Testament.

Christ from the beginning:

Acts 26:23,24

 (See BOM criticisms page 50 for a good list)

Adam:

Gen 3:3  Father thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever…

Similitude Gen 4:4 And Adam called upon the name of the Lord, and Eve also, his wife; and they heard the voice of the Lord, from the way towards the garden of Eden, speaking unto them, and they saw him not; for they were shut out from his presence.

5 And he gave unto them commandments, that they should worship the Lord their God; and should offer the firstlings of their flocks for an offering unto the Lord.

6 And Adam was obedient unto the commandments of the Lord. And after many days, an angel of the Lord appeared unto Adam, saying, Why dost thou offer sacrifices unto the Lord? And Adam said unto him, I know not, save the Lord commanded me.

7 And then the angel spake, saying, This thing is a similitude of the sacrifice of the Only Begotten of the Father, which is full of grace and truth;

8 Wherefore, thou shalt do all that thou doest, in the name of the Son. And thou shalt repent, and call upon God, in the name of the Son for evermore.

Genesis 6:53 And he also said unto him, If thou wilt, turn unto me and hearken unto my voice, and believe, and repent of all thy transgressions, and be baptized, even in water, in the name of mine Only Begotten Son, who is full of grace and truth, which is Jesus Christ, the only name which shall be given under heaven, whereby salvation shall come unto the children of men; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, asking all things in his name, and whatsoever ye shall ask it shall be given you.

Genesis 6:60 For no unclean thing can dwell there, or dwell in his presence; for, in the language of Adam, Man of Holiness is his name; and the name of his Only Begotten is the son of Man, even Jesus Christ, a righteous judge, who shall come in the meridian of time.

Enoch:   Genesis 7:57 And it came to pass, that Enoch continued his cry unto the Lord, saying, I ask thee, O Lord, in the name of thine Only Begotten, even Jesus Christ, that thou wilt have mercy upon Noah, and his seed, that the earth might never more be covered by the floods.

Noah:     Genesis 8:11 And it came to pass, that Noah continued his preaching unto the people, saying, Hearken and give heed unto my words, believe and repent of your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, even as our fathers did, and ye shall receive the Holy Ghost, that ye may have all things made manifest;

Brother of Jared: (time of Babel) Ether 1:76 And when he had said these words, behold the Lord shewed himself unto him, and said, Because thou knowest these things, ye are redeemed from the fall; therefore ye are brought back into my presence; therefore I shew myself unto you. 77 Behold, I am he who was prepared from the foundation of the world to redeem my people. Behold, I am Jesus Christ. I am the Father and the Son. 78 In me shall all mankind have life, and that eternally, even they who shall believe on my name; and they shall become my sons and my daughters. 79 And never have I shewed myself unto man whom I have created, for never has man believed in me as thou hast. 80 Seest thou that ye are created after mine own image? Yea, even all men were created in the beginning, after mine own image. 81 Behold this body, which ye now behold, is the body of my spirit; and man have I created after the body of my spirit; and even as I appear unto thee to be in the spirit, will I appear unto my people in the flesh.

Blessing from Jacob to Judah: Gen 49:10  The secptre…

Moses:  DC 22:4a  And I have a work for thee, Moses, my son; and thou art in the similitude of mine Only Begotten; and my Only Begotten is and shall be the Savior, for he is full of grace and truth;

Acts 3:22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A Prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.

King Benjamin: Mosiah 1:109 And the Lord God hath sent his holy prophets among all the children of men to declare these things to every kindred, nation, and tongue, that thereby whosoever should believe that Christ should come, the same might receive remission of their sins, and rejoice with exceedingly great joy, even as though he had already come among them.

New Testament Apostles used Old Testament to Teach of Christ

Acts 28:23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

Genesis 7:79 And it came to pass, that Methuselah, the son of Enoch, was not taken, that the covenants of the Lord might be fulfilled which he made to Enoch; for he truly covenanted with Enoch, that Noah should be of the fruit of his loins.

Was Shem Melchisedec?  Was alive about 98 years before the flood.

Abraham was born about 350 years after the flood.  Shem lived 610 years.

Shem was the 'Patriarch' of the world at that point.  Who else would've been the one to bestow priesthood, typical of Adam.  Shem lived to speak with Methusaleh, who was the son of Enoch.

Genesis 14:17 And Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought forth bread and wine; and he break bread and blest it; and he blest the wine, he being the priest of the most high God,

(What was the bread and wine for???)

Genesis 14:25 And Melchizedek lifted up his voice and blessed Abram.

Genesis 14:26 Now Melchizedek was a man of faith, who wrought righteousness; and when a child he feared God, and stopped the mouths of lions, and quenched the violence of fire.

Christ was a High Priest after the order of Mel:

Hebrews 6:20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

Hebrews 7:3  KJ has major error--says Melchisedec was without beginning of days or end of years--Inspired Version corrected to say 'order'

Xref Gen 14: 25-27,  xref Alma 9:72-73

DC 104:1b  Why the first is called the Melchisedec priesthood, is because Melchisedec was such a great high priest: before his day it was called the holy priesthood, after the order of the Son of God;

DC 104:1c  but out of respect or reverence to the name of the Supreme Being, to avoid the too frequent repetition of his name, they, the church, in ancient days, called that priesthood after Melchisedec, or the Melchisedec priesthood.

Genesis 11:7 And these were the generations of Shem. And Shem being an hundred years old, begat Arphaxad two years after the flood; and Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.

Christ was a high priest after this order

Genesis 9:30 And he said, Blessed be the Lord God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant, and a veil of darkness shall cover him, that he shall be known among all men.

Genesis 9:31 God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

(But DC 83:2e  Esaias also lived in the days of Abraham and was blessed of him, which Abraham received the priesthood from Melchisedec; who received it through the lineage of his fathers, even till Noah;)

Note that Abraham receives priesthood from Melchisedec; KJ New Testament acknowledges that Christ was a HP after order of Mel, but KJ has no record when Melchis. Priesthood was 'suspended.'

Melchis also offers Bread/Wine to Abraham--similitude of sacrifice of Christ.

Parallels to Law of  Moses and Christ:

Torah is read in 3.5 years:  Christ's ministry was 3.5 years

The daily reading was fulfilled by his daily life events.

Death reigned over all from Adam till End of Law of Moses.  Law of Moses was also a type for being justified--punishment for sins.  Propitiation for our sins, Christ and new covenant. Romans 5:14 Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. For I say, that through the offense, death reigned over all.

Galatians 3:19 Wherefore then, the law was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom th e law for righteousness to everyone that believeth.

(Post class:  Actually discussed types, then covered Moses story and listed principles of gospel, and had Nicolas clark tell story of Exodus up to the crossing of the red sea.  Began making the comparison from the story to the principles of the gospel.)

Introducing Moses story:

Review:  God's purpose through Adam, Enoch, Seth, Noah, Shem, etc., had been to teach that Christ would come into the world.  All rested on the Israelites to fulfill.  Abraham's promise that a messiah would be born.

Types and shadows:

Genesis 6:66 And, behold, all things have their likeness; and all things are created and made to bear record of me; both things which are temporal, and things which are spiritual; things which are in the heavens above, and things which are on the earth, and things which are in the earth, and things which are under the earth, both above and beneath, all things bear record of me.

2 Nephi 8:9 And all things which have been given of God from the beginning of the world, unto man, are the typifying of him.  (i.e. made into types)

After days of Moses,

Jacob 3:22 But behold, the Jews were a stiff-necked people; and they despised the words of plainness, and killed the prophets, and sought for things that they could not understand.

II Corinthians 3:12 Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech; 13 And not as Moses, which put a veil over his face, that the children of Israel could not steadfastly look to the end of that which is abolished; 14 But their minds were blinded; for until this day remaineth the same veil untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which veil is done away in Christ. 15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the veil is upon their heart. 16 Nevertheless, when their heart shall turn to the Lord, the veil shall be taken away.

2 Nephi 12:80 For after the book of which I have spoken shall come forth, and be written unto the Gentiles, and sealed up again unto the Lord, there shall be many which shall believe the words which are written; and they shall carry them forth unto the remnant of our seed. 81 And then shall the remnant of our seed know concerning us, how that we came out from Jerusalem, and that they are descendants of the Jews. 82 And the gospel of Jesus Christ shall be declared among them; wherefore, they shall be restored unto the knowledge of their fathers, and also to the knowledge of Jesus Christ, which was had among their fathers. 83 And then shall they rejoice; for they shall know that it is a blessing unto them from the hand of God; 84 And their scales of darkness shall begin to fall from their eyes: and many generations shall not pass away among them, save they shall be a white and a delightsome people. 85 And it shall come to pass that the Jews which are scattered, also shall begin to believe in Christ: and they shall begin to gather in upon the face of the land; 86 And as many as shall believe in Christ, shall also become a delightsome people. 87 And it shall come to pass that the Lord God shall commence his work, among all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, to bring about the restoration of his people upon the earth.

Types

Mosiah 1:110 Yet the Lord God saw that his people were a stiffnecked people, and he appointed unto them a law, even the law of Moses. 111 And many signs, and wonders, and types, and shadows shewed he unto them, concerning his coming: 112 And also holy prophets spake unto them concerning his coming; 113 And yet they hardened their hearts, and understood not that the law of Moses availeth nothing, except it were through the atonement of his blood;

Mosiah 8:8 But behold, I say unto you, that all these things were types of things to come.

Mosiah 8:90 Therefore, if ye teach the Law of Moses, also teach that it is a shadow of those things which are to come;

Alma 10:8 And it was this same Melchisedec to whom Abraham paid tithes: yea, even our father Abraham paid tithes of one tenth part of all that he possessed. 9 Now these ordinances were given after this manner, that thereby the people might look forward on the Son of God, it being a type of his order, or it being his order; 10 And this, that they might look forward to him for a remission of their sins, that they might enter into the rest of the Lord.

Alma 14:75 But notwithstanding the Law of Moses, they did look forward to the coming of Christ, concerning that the Law of Moses was a type of his coming, and believing that they must keep those outward performances, until the time that he should be revealed unto them. 76 Now they (Smart Nephites) did not suppose that salvation came by the Law of Moses; but the Law of Moses did serve to strengthen their faith in Christ; 77 And thus they did retain a hope through faith, unto eternal salvation, relying upon the spirit of prophecy, which spake of those things to come.

Alma 16:191 Behold, he was spoken of by Moses; yea, and behold, a type was raised up in the wilderness, that whosoever would look upon it might live. And many did look and live.

Alma 17:80 And now I say, Is there not a type in this thing? For just as surely as this director did bring our fathers, by following its course, to the promised land, shall the words of Christ, if we follow their course, carry us beyond this vale of sorrow, into a far better land of promise.

Ether 6:6 And that a New Jerusalem should be built up upon this land, unto the remnant of the seed of Joseph, for which things there has been a type; for as Joseph brought his father down into the land of Egypt, even so he died there;

Shadows

Colossians 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of a holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days; 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

Hebrews 8:5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle; for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern showed to thee in the mount.

Hebrews 10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices, which they offered continually year by year make the comers thereunto perfect.

Moses taught Christ

Hebrews 11:24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years of discretion, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; 25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; 26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward.

I Corinthians 10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink; for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them; and that Rock was Christ. 5 But with many of them God was not well pleased; for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

(Drinking from the Rock was typifying from drinking from Christ.  Why, then was it a big sin to strike the rock???  Because the rock was to represent Christ-whom they should not smite.  But would prophetically).

Numbers 20:6 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces; and the glory of the Lord appeared unto them. 7 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 8 Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock; so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink. 9 And Moses took the rod from before the Lord, as he commanded him. 10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock? 11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice; and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also. 12 And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

(Also, no such thing as a 'small sin'  DC 81:1c  Beware from henceforth and refrain from sin lest sore judgments fall upon your heads; for unto whom much is given much is required; and he who sins against the greater light shall receive the greater condemnation.)

3 Nephi 13:47 For whoso receiveth not the words of Jesus, and the words of those whom he hath sent, receiveth not him; and therefore he will not receive them at the last day; and it would be better for them if they had not been born.

Numbers 11:1 And when the people complained, it displeased the Lord; and the Lord heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the Lord burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp. 2 And the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the Lord, the fire was quenched. 3 And he called the name of the place Taberah; because the fire of the Lord burnt among them. 4 And the mixed multitude that was among them fell a lusting; and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? 5 We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic; 6 But now our soul is dried away; there is nothing at all, besides this manna, before our eyes. 7 And the manna was as coriander seed, and the color thereof as the color of bdellium. 8 And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it; and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil. 9 And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it. 10 Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent; and the anger of the Lord was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased.

(Nothing wrong with garlic, leeks, etc.  Point is that they were willing to re-enter slavery to have their old life back.  Didn't understand the hope of the promised land.)

Also, nothing wrong with eating pork.

Mosiah 1:119 For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been, from the fall of Adam, and will be, for ever and ever;

Mosiah 1:120 But if he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man, and becometh a saint, through the atonement of Christ, the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.

(God was trying to entice the Israelites to the things of the spirit.  Their example displays how the natural man will die an enemy to God and will not enter the Kingdom of God.)

I Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness unto him; neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Convocation

Exodus 12:16 And in the first day there shall be a holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be a holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you.

Leviticus 23:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the Lord, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts.

Leviticus 23:3 Six days shall work be done; but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, a holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein; it is the sabbath of the Lord in all your dwellings.

Leviticus 23:4 These are the feasts of the Lord, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons.

Leviticus 23:7 In the first day ye shall have a holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work therein.

Notes:

Talk about receiving the law.

Exodus

  Stiff necked.

Mosiah 1:110 Yet the Lord God saw that his people were a stiffnecked people, and he appointed unto them a law, even the law of Moses.

Mosiah 8:6 And now I say unto you, that it was expedient that there should be a law given to the children of Israel, yea, even a very strict law: for they were a stiff-necked people: quick to do iniquity, and slow to remember the Lord their God;

Jacob 3:22 But behold, the Jews were a stiff-necked people; and they despised the words of plainness, and killed the prophets, and sought for things that they could not understand. 23 Wherefore, because of their blindness, which blindness came by looking beyond the mark, they must needs fall: 24 For God hath taken away his plainness from them, and delivered unto them many things which they can not understand, because they desired it. 25 And because they desired it, God hath done it, that they may stumble.

The Law

Alma 16:215 And behold, this is the whole meaning of the law; every whit pointing to that great and last sacrifice; and that great and last sacrifice will be the Son of God; yea, infinite and eternal; and thus he shall bring salvation to all those who shall believe on his name;

Hebrew 1697  dabar:  "…every word…"

3632   kawleel:  "..whole, perfect, fuly, utterly…  "

Greek: 3650  holos:  "…whole, perfect…"

3 Nephi 4:2 And there was not any man who could do a miracle in the name of Jesus, save he were cleansed every whit from his iniquity.

Law was not intended to be the means of salvation.

Acts 13:39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

After class summary:  talked about Nephi slaying Laban being a part of the Law of Moses.  Had finished by reading Alma 16:215, was about to read 2 N 11:45 regarding deadness.  Ralph Bobbitt is teaching next Sunday the 28th (our anniversary, will be returning from skiing in colorado.

December 5, 1999

Had class and showed law of moses printed (copier broke, no handouts).  Discussed law of moses with sacrifice of lamb, and how it relates to Christ.  Next week, show how priest in temple offering blood relates to Christs entering heaven.  Jean asked why, with obvious types and shadows, don't the Jews believe.  Share the Rabbi's information next week, and show more on how the Jews have been stiff, stumbling.
