Jacob chapter two gives good outline for effective sermons

  1. Realizes his responsibility and authority (Jacob 1:17-19)

 

  1. Get's spiritual direction by inquiring of the Lord. (Jacob 2:12-17)

 

  1. Tells the people what he is going to tell them:  (Jacob 2:5  "appearing to labor under sin).

 

  1. Expresses humility, but makes no excuses. (Jacob 2:6,7, 31)

 

  1. Delivers a message that the people can use. Explains how they misinterpret scripture and justify sin. (Jacob 2:32)

 

  1. Offers solution: (Jacob 2:49 Look unto God with firmness, pray with faith, lift up you head, feast on his love).

 

 

1.  Gives a concrete metaphor that people can relate to:  Makes a good parallel between the Lamanites physical filthiness and the Nephites spiritual filthiness. (vs 59-61)

 

2.  Gives consequence for sin:  (verse 63) will bring their own children to destruction.

 

3.  Makes call for change:  verse 64:  hearken to my word (i.e. listen up), arouse the faculties of your soul (commit to change for the good) shake yourselves (realize this is for your own good).  Loose yourself from the pains of hell.
